Malta is also a nation of dog lovers
by Scott Grech – The Malta Independent Online – 10th August 2010
Marlon Howes is very proud of his latest attraction, which appears to be going down very well with the canine population at Malta’s only dog fun park – a swimming and therapy pool specifically made for dogs.
Such is the popularity of Mr Howes’ dog fun park on the road leading to Ta’ Qali, which opened early this year and is named ‘Pelham’ – after a former dog of his – that he has been inundated with requests to open other dog fun parks in Gozo and in the south of Malta.
“By paying a small annual fee, owners can bring their dogs and let them roam about in the park which also has a 14-piece agility course.
“The majority of members come in the evening after a hard day’s work, leaving their dogs to play with other dogs while they chill out and help themselves to a can of beer or coffee or finish the rest of the day’s errands,” Mr Howes explains.
Mr Howes, a professional dog trainer with over 20 years of experience and a former British dog trainer champion, stresses the importance of letting dogs socialise with other dogs, and for owners not to fall privy to the misconception that dogs attack each other when they mingle with others.
“I have received complaints from various dog owners that their dogs not only do not like mingling with other dogs, but they also tend to dispose of their ‘waste’ when inside their houses.
“However, when I ask them when or where they take their dogs out, those with such dogs tend to reply that they hardly do so because of work commitments.
“Dogs are not objects. They, like us humans, need to exercise and socialise on a regular basis,” he states.
Mr Howes and his family moved to Malta three years ago after having visited the country several times on holiday before.
The main reason they did so, he says, is the good impression they got of the country’s schools and educational system.
“Shortly after relocating to Malta I saw an advert in a paper wanting a professional dog trainer and having been brought up on a farm surrounded by dogs, it was only logical for me to give the person concerned a call.
“It turned out that the person who placed the advert wanted someone to train his dog to become more obedient.
“After managing to effectively do so, word soon spread around and I started receiving other requests from owners to visit their residences to try and make their dogs bow to orders.
“From then on I realised the potential of opening up a dog fun park in Malta, where I also hold dog whistle and circuit training sessions and obedience classes from time to time,” comments Mr Howes.
He says Golden Retrievers and Labradors are the easiest dogs to train, while Boxers and Great Danes tend to pose more of a challenge.
Pugs and Yorkshire terriers are often labelled lazy and unwilling to learn, added Mr Howes, but their intelligence can sometimes surprise even the more sceptical of sceptics.
“In the few years that I have lived in Malta and ever since I opened the fun park, I can definitely say that, similarly to the British, the Maltese are a nation of dog lovers too.
“Nevertheless, dog owners need to put a bit more effort when it comes to controlling their dogs,” said Mr Howes.
When asked whether he will open up another dog fun park in the future, Mr Howes replied that he has no immediate plans to do so in the near future, “but it would give me the utmost satisfaction if my assistant, Luke Taliana, a young and aspiring dog trainer with great potential, manages to open up a dog fun park himself in future”.
